How We Make a Custom Bag: From Sketch to Stitch
Published 13 July 2026 · 7 min read · LittleEva.in Workshop, Kannur, Kerala

Every bag that leaves our workshop in Chemperi, Kannur is made by hand, one at a time. There is no production line here — just careful measuring, sharp shears, a well-loved sewing machine, and a lot of attention to small details. In this post we walk you through the complete journey of a custom bag, from your first sketch to the parcel at your door.
Whether you order a ready-made design or create your own in our online bag designer, the making process below is the same.
1Design and consultation
Everything starts with your idea. Some customers send us a quick phone sketch, others use the bag designer on our site to draw the front, back, and side views, choose dimensions, and note pocket or strap preferences. We review each design personally and reply on WhatsApp with suggestions — for example, whether a magnetic snap or a zip closure suits the shape better, or whether the handles should be longer for shoulder carry.
Nothing is cut until you have approved the final design, dimensions, and price.

2Choosing the material
The fabric decides how the bag feels, wears, and ages. We stock canvas, linen, leather, silk, and velvet, and we help you match the material to how you will actually use the bag — a daily market tote needs a heavier canvas, while an occasion clutch can carry delicate silk or velvet.
At this stage we also select the lining, the interfacing that gives the bag its structure, and hardware such as zips, rings, and magnetic snaps. You can browse the same options in the bags collection — every product page lists the materials available for it.
3Pattern making and cutting
The approved design is turned into paper patterns — one for each panel of the bag: front, back, gusset, base, pockets, and straps. Seam allowances are added to every edge, because a bag that is even half a centimetre off will never sit square.
The patterns are laid on the fabric along the grain, traced with tailor's chalk, and cut by hand with shears. Cutting is the step where precision matters most: clean, accurate panels make every later step easier, and a rushed cut can never be fixed by stitching.

4Stitching and assembly
Stitching happens in a planned order. Details that sit inside the panels — zips, pockets, and labels — are sewn first while the panels are still flat. Then the body comes together: front and back are joined to the gusset, the base is boxed, and the lining is made as a second, slightly smaller bag that slips inside.
Stress points get special treatment. Handle bases and strap anchors are reinforced with double rows of stitching and bar tacks, because these are the points that carry the weight every day. Seams are pressed open as we go, which is the small, invisible discipline that separates a crisp, professional bag from a homemade one.

5Embroidery and personalisation
This is the step our customers love most. Names, initials, monograms, or floral artwork are embroidered onto the panels before final assembly, so the design sits flat and the back of the embroidery is hidden neatly inside the lining.
Simple text is done in a single thread colour; artwork like the flowers below is built up in layers of satin and stem stitch. If you upload artwork with your order, we redraw it at embroidery scale and confirm the placement with you first.

6Finishing and quality check
The last stretch is all detail work: handles and buckles are fitted, raw edges are bound or turned, loose threads are trimmed, and the whole bag is pressed into shape. Then it goes through our checklist — every seam inspected, the zip run twenty times, straps pulled under load, and the bag stood on a flat table to confirm it sits square.
If anything fails the check, it goes back to the machine. Only approved bags get packed.

7Packing and delivery
Before shipping we photograph your finished bag and send the pictures for your approval. Then it is wrapped, boxed, and couriered anywhere in India with tracking. Most custom bags are completed within one to three weeks depending on the complexity and embroidery work — we confirm the timeline when you order.
